Please see the full rules page for details on the rules, but the jist of it is: Labporn Diagrams Tutorials News Subreddit Rules Has ANYONE attempted to solder a new CPU to the N40L motherboard? - If so, how did it go? What went wrong/How did you do it?ĮDIT 1: Changed VT-d to VT-v, thanks /u/elementsofevanĮDIT 2: I DID IT!! - Big thanks to /u/metalnuke for providing a workaround! - OH, and I have a note for /u/Hypfer, thank you for pointing out my mistake, but there is no need to be insulting.New to Homelab? Start Here! Homelab Wiki HomelabSales I'm determined and I don't want to give up. I've invested a small fortune in setting up a lab (I'm a poor student trying to learn, £150 quid is a lot of money to me!) and I can't use VT-d. SECOND SNAG: HP directly soldered the CPU to the damn Motherboard!!!! - SERIOUSLY, WTF HP!!! I pull out the motherboard of the server to have a look at the socket type to see if I could search for something more technical than "HP N40L CPU upgrade".

So I frantically search Google for compatible CPU's that support VT-d with this server. It's so popular among the modding community". I thought to myself, "I can't be the only one who's ran into this snag with this server. Where's VT-v? - SHITTTTT!!!!! - The CPU doesn't support VT-v!! :'( So I look online and grab a gigabit network card off eBay, and as soon as it arrives, I threw it into the server and then jumped into the BIOS to enable VT-v so I could passthrough the card to the VM. I then decided that I wanted to run pfSense to act as a gateway to a VPN service not only to my VM's, but to other physical hosts on my network in my house.

So I go ahead and start installing Server 2012, a test Windows 7 image and for the heck of it, I also built a LAMP stack (CentOS) to practice my PHP and MySQL skills occasionally.

I then grab a 16GB USB stick, pop it into the internal USB port (Yeah, this thing has an internal USB port on the motherboard, I was impressed!) and install ESXi 6.0 on the USB drive, giving me approximately 3TB worth of Hard Disks to dump a ton of VM's on.
#Hp n40l mod
I already have a mountain of old SATA drives that I've pulled out of dead computers over the years, so I threw 5 drives into it (BIOS mod allows you to use the SATA port intended for an optical drive for a 5th Hard Disk). So I pick up a HP MicroServer N40L off eBay for £100. It's also quite popular around the modding community as there's modded bios' out there for this box which allow you to directly mess around with the northbridge and increase the speed of the SATA controller etc. The HP MicroServer seems to be quite popular for a simple lab setup. So I wanted a cheap ESXi environment to practice on. r/HomeNetworking - Simpler networking advice. r/pfsense - for all things pfsense ('nix firewall) Might be able to find things useful for a lab. r/hardwareswap - Used hardware, swap hardware.
